Beginning Saturday, October 1, those age 18 or younger will board for free. It's a result of this year's Move Ahead Washington transportation package. The law directs transit agencies to provide free fares for passengers 18 and under in Washington state.

There are a few restrictions. Youth must be riding as a passenger in a vehicle or walking onto a state ferry. It doesn't include teens behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Drivers 18 and under will continue to pay the adult vehicle and driver fare.

Youth tickets will no longer be available at self-serve kiosks or online. However, youth walking onto a ferry will still need a ticket or a valid ORCA card to board at terminals where one is currently needed. Terminal employees at the ticket booth can issue the free-fare youth tickets, which will be valid for two hours.

On September 1, the Free Youth Transit Pass was implemented for riders 18 and younger.
